This is not a love song – there’s a blinding flash of the contrary! I do understand people thinking it is but I actually wrote it in frustration at losing inspiration and not being able to write songs. I hadn’t written much for a few months and those I had done were eminently binnable, songwriter’s block? This song was the drought-breaker. Back then, as a professional songwriter (ha!), it concerned me to not write for a while, these days I’m more relaxed about it.
lyrics
I had a dream you were down on the farm trying to get your head
I should have seen there was cause for alarm, and no one cared
I don’t think I can make it without you
No one seems to know anything about you
And now that you’ve gone, I can’t go on like this
I was away fooling round with the “stars” but you could not reach
What could I say as we sat in the bars I just could not teach
And I don’t think I can make it without you
No one seems to know anything about you
And now that you’ve gone, I can’t go on like this
Oh! It’s funny to wake up and find, there’s suddenly so little time
The memory trips over my mind, it was fine
I had a dream I was there by your side and it all came true
Now that it’s been there is nowhere to hide, not for me and you
But I don’t think I can make it without you
No one seems to know a single thing about you
And now that you’ve gone, I can’t go on like this
I can’t go on like this! I can’t go on like this
I can’t go on like this! I can’t go on, like this
